Plan and Elevation Drawings Maths

Projections

This topic is all almost understanding 2D projections of 3D objects. Specifically, at that place are 3 projections of a 3D that we will consider:

  • The plan – what the shape looks like from above
  • The side meridian – what the shape looks similar from the side
  • The forepart meridian – what the shape looks similar from the front.

Make sure you lot are happy with the following before continuing:

Plans and Elevations of a 3D Shape

Have a look at the square-based pyramid shown.

plans and elevations pyramid

Plan

The plan is the view from to a higher place. This would show a square with i line going from each corner to the centre.

Side Elevation

If we look from the side, it would look similar a triangle.

Front Meridian

This is the view yous would encounter straight from the front. If you imagine standing in front of the pyramid and looking at it, it would wait like a triangle.

Example 1: Drawing Plans and Elevations

Draw a plan, a front end elevation, and a side elevation of the 3D shape beneath.

drawing plans and elevations

This is a typical example of a shape you would be given in a question on this topic – 1 made of a series of 1 cm blocks. It allows united states of america to clearly get the dimensions of our projections right.

Plan

This would bear witness an L-shape very clearly – 3 blocks long and two blocks wide (at the base of the 50).

Side elevation

This would just show the base of the L – 2 side-by-side ane cm blocks.

Front height

This would show the front of the L – 3 side-by-side i cm blocks.

So, the resulting 3 projections look like:

Instance 2: Interpreting Plans and Elevations

Use the plan, front height and side elevation shown beneath to construct a drawing of the 3D shape described.

interpreting plans and elevations

To do this, we'll call up near each projection i-by-one and consider what it means.

Plan – Shows the full general shape of the object (a P shape, sort of).

Side summit – We can run into that only the third foursquare has 2 levels

Front elevation –  From this we can see that only the left side has ii levels.

From this we tin draw the following 3D shape.

Example Questions

As we can see, the shape is one block high and is the shape of a cantankerous, or letter ten. As a result, the plan is going to be the shape of a cross, and both elevations will only exist one block loftier. Furthermore, we can come across that in looking at both from the front and from the side, the shape in question is three blocks wide, so the resulting elevations will both be 3 blocks wide and ane block high. All three projections are shown below.

projections plans and elevations example 1 answer

Firstly, looking at the program we can come across that the shape is i block broad, and four blocks long. And then, from the front end elevation we can see that the shape is ii blocks loftier, but at both ends the shape doesn't actually touch the floor – those ii end blocks are only fastened to the peak row. In this particular case, we actually don't need the side elevation to complete the picture, the beginning ii are enough. So, the resulting 3D shape looks like:

projections plans and elevations example 2 answer

The programme should show the shape from directly higher up. From this viewpoint it volition be three units across (assuming the small-scale square is 1 unit) hence it will wait like:

The side pinnacle will view the shape equally 3 units loftier:

projections plans and elevations example 3 answer side elevation

The plan should show the shape from direct above. From this viewpoint it will exist iii units (bold the minor square is ane unit of measurement) across hence will expect like:

projections plans and elevations example 4 answer plan

The side elevation volition view the shape as 2 units loftier:

All iii projections are equally seen below.
